A lawyer cannot live without a translator, but their mutual relations sometimes take the form of „it’s complicated”.
Participants of the panel discussion organized by PPM “Legal translation – challenges, problems and opportunities from the perspective of translators and lawyers”, which took place on March 16, 2021, had a unique chance to exchange experiences and raise the systemic problem of the Spanish regulations regarding access to a translator in court proceedings, and consequently the enforcement of the fundamental right of every human being – the right to defense.
An essential element of the discussion was the presentation of two different perspectives – the points of view were presented by:
- Lucyna Lopez Saez (French and Spanish translator) – from the perspective of challenges faced by translators,
Monika Marczewska, attorney at law (ICAM attorney, MMB Legal Abogados) – from the practice and experience of lawyers in matters requiring the participation of a translator.
The special guest of the meeting was Karolina Gawlicka-Bąk – counselor – Police Liaison Officer, Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Madrid.
